Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme

Applies to large enterprises, who are obliged to have energy audits conducted every four years, starting from 5 December 2015.

There are some exemptions. For example if you have an energy management system that has been certified to ISO 50001 by an accredited body, nothing within the certified scope and boundary need be audited. It is also possible to get exemptions for buildings by voluntarily obtaining a Display Energy Certificate, or by having a Non-Domestic Green Deal evaluation.

ESOS audits can be conducted by anybody, qualified or not, using any methodology. As a minimum they must, however, be reviewed and signed off by a qualified lead energy assessor. Lead energy assessors achieve that status by virtue of being on a professional body's register that has been approved by the Environment Agency.
