Building Regulations apply in England and Wales, and define acceptable standards for most aspects of a building's construction, such as fire protection. ease of access, and energy efficiency among others. Similar provisions apply in Scotland.
Part L of the regulations, which covers the requirements relating to the conservation of fuel and power, addresses efficiency of heating via insulation values, area of windows, doors and openings, air-tightness, efficiency of boilers and so on. Lighting efficiency and hot water storage are also regulated. Part L is in four sections:
- L1A new domestic dwellings
- L1B existing domestic dwellings
- L2A new non-domestic buildings
- L2B new non-domestic buildings
Part L2 includes consideration of solar heating and solar gain.
